Explorer Jacques Cartier, while searching for passage to India, ended up in the St. Lawrence river and landed on the island today know as Montreal. The year was 1535 and he recorded that at the time on the island lived Iroquoian people in the village of Hochelaga. Century had past by before first French settlement took its shape. Montreal (photos) changed hands throughout the centuries while expanding and welcoming new settlers and most recently immigrants, growing in to a great cosmopolitan city famous for its museums, cafés, gourmet restaurants and numerous festivals.

Stylish boutiques and restaurants as well as art galleries are enriching already prestigious windows of stone build houses.

Montreal hosted 1976 Summer Olympic Games and it is host to next events: the Tennis Masters, the International Jazz (photos), Film, Comedy and Fireworks Festivals, as well to the Formula One race – Ile St. Helene and Ile Notre Dame (photos).

• Canada day or Fête du Canada (formerly Dominion Day) celebration is held every year on the Parliament Hill on July 1st.
• Rideau Canal and locks are open to and in use by the pleasure crafts during the summer months. In winter months part of the Rideau Canal in Ottawa becomes one of the world’s largest skating rinks.
• Terrance Stanley “Terry” Fox, was a Canadian who started a cross-Canada run, “the Marathon of Hope”, to raise money for cancer research. Now, the Marathon of Hope is held every September in many countries around the World for the same reasons. Terry Fox had not succeed to run to the west coast of Canada due to the illness but greatness of his idea and memory on Terry Fox lives with us.
• The National Gallery of Canada.
• Canada remembers it’s fallen soldiers. Canada entered World War I in 1914. 68.000 Canadians died in World War I. Canada declared war on Germany in 1939. 34.000 Canadians died in World War II.
