Discovering Prince Edward County reminded me right away of another historically very similar beginning for settlers of another part of Canada and this is the region of Eastern Townships (Cantons-de-l’Est) in Quebec.
Booth regions were first settled few centuries ago by loyalists who left US during or right after the war of Independence. Settlers wanted to stay loyal to the British crown and they looked up to the North.
Few centuries went by but the way of life has been preserved and cultivated for everyone’s benefit. Prince Edward County today is a rich variety of country living all of us are searching for when looking for near by escape from the urban chaos.
Prince Edward County on the Lake Ontario is best known for Sandbanks Provincial Park and it’s 7km of sand dunes and sandy beach. It takes just about 2h drive from Toronto or around 4h from Montreal (travel notes) to enjoy the sand and the beach.
But, there is much more to the Prince Edward County then beach (photos) and beautiful camp grounds right on them.
Once settled in, you should visit picturesque town of Picton, explore its main street, crafts and artisan shops, enjoy a meal in one of the gourmet restaurants or on a rainy day, simply go to the old movie theater. Explore the quiet roads through Prince Edward County, discover numerous farms and their produce, local cheese producers, apple orchards, strawberry fields, vineyards, B&B’s, Inn’s, cottages, even a Drive In movie theater, water sports and much more that Prince Edward county has to offer. See part of it on our video…
