Few travel notes from Eastern Townships →

After American War of Independence, the first wave of American immigrants arrived wanting to stay loyal to the British crown. They were first settlers in the Eastern Townships. Silent tombstones are witness of hard life some families went through in late 18th and through 19th century.

Enlarged photo #7 of a tombstone tells tragic life story of one family:

Johnston Worden 1809-1896

His wife;

Catherine M. Hawk 1817-1860

Their children;

Silvester 1844-1846
Lydia 1853-1858
George 1847-1864
Hannah 1860-1864

Back of the tombstone notes that after his wife’s death, Johnston Worden got married two more times;

Abigal Chambers 1824-1871

and

Eliza Rouse 1833-1901
